A Garden's Beauty Never Lies In One Flower: Launch Exhibition
Welcome to Akoje Gallery's inaugural exhibition, a vibrant celebration of art and culture from around the world, with a special focus on the voices of African, Caribbean, and diaspora artists. As a gallery dedicated to giving these exceptional talents the recognition they deserve on a global stage, we are thrilled to present the works of seven exceptional artists - Ibiok Bright, Oluwole Omofemi, Nissi Ogulu, Sarah Knights, Dotun Popoola, Olawunmi Banjo, and Qozeem Abdulrahman.
Our journey through this exhibition commences at a grand entrance, marked by two fire pits casting a warm, inviting glow. Spear installations, strategically interspersed along the path, alternate between vertical and crossed positions, symbolizing the strength and resilience of the artists and their creations.
Ibiok Bright's art challenges conventions and perceptions of value in the art world. One canvas unrolled on the floor, with three blank canvases beneath, provokes contemplation on the layers of creativity. Another canvas hangs from the ceiling, emphasizing the fragility and preciousness of art.
Oluwole Omofemi's work resonates with a powerful message about preserving African identity. On a tabletop, his artwork takes centre stage, surrounded by vintage polaroid pictures showcasing diverse Black women's hairstyles. The contrast between past and present illuminates the importance of acknowledging and celebrating cultural heritage.
Sarah Knights, a teacher and artist, presents her creations on easels, with sketches paying tribute to her educational influence. Her back-to-back artworks invite viewers to explore the intersection of knowledge and artistic expression, forging a connection between two worlds.
Nissi Ogulu's artwork is displayed on a wall, accompanied by its corresponding musical instrument. The name "NISSI" will be displayed in jazzed up lighting up the floor, paying tribute to her star power. This exhibition celebrates the fusion of art and music.
Qozeem Abdulrahman's work invites playful engagement, featuring a standalone piece on a standard stand surrounded by the Nigerian game ‘Ayo’. This presentation highlights the artist's sense of nostalgia and childlike wonder.
Dotun Popoola's sculpture, an art piece made from found metal materials, is nestled within an installation of weathered bamboo trees. This striking composition draws attention to the overlooked and discarded beauty found in unexpected places, echoing the resilience of the human spirit.
Olawunmi Banjo's artworks depict inner strength and resilience. Her unique style incorporates wires within the paintings, which are suspended by robust ropes. This presentation emphasizes the power within and the connection between art and strength.
This inaugural exhibition at Akoje Gallery is a testament to the gallery's commitment to showcasing the diversity of artistic talent across borders, while acknowledging the distinct experiences and stories of African, Caribbean, and diaspora artists. We invite you to immerse yourself in this rich tapestry of creativity, to engage with the art, and to be inspired by the stories it tells. We hope you find this experience enlightening, thought-provoking, and, above all, a celebration of the global artistic community's boundless potential.
